Unhappy with the texture of your skin? Here are three ways to get smoother skin, depending on what has caused it.
One of the most frequent concerns we hear from our cosmetic patients relates to their skin texture. As time goes on, your skin can develop a rough and uneven appearance due to a buildup of dead skin cells, an excess of sun exposure, and pore size irregularity—all of which can lead to your skin appearing dull. Depending on the severity of your texture concerns, there are several treatment options available to smooth our your skin.
Dermal Fillers
If you are looking for a skin texture remedy that comes with no downtime at all and provides results instantly, dermal fillers are your ideal option. Fillers remain one of the simplest methods for instantly altering dramatic skin texture concerns such as atrophic scarring and they come with the added benefit of providing much needed hyaluronic acid to the skin in areas where it is most needed. However, one caveat: fillers do not address the cause of uneven skin texture so make sure you first treat the acne or other causes that may be leading to the scars in order to protect your investment in fillers. If your uneven texture is due to excess dead skin cells or your pores appear to be enlarged, there are other options that may be more suitable.
Chemical Peels
Chemical peels provide a simple way to aid your skin in sloughing off dead skin cells. Your skin naturally performs this process on it’s own as you build new skin cells and shed old ones, however, sometimes dead skin cells can clog your pores and cause build up that leaves your skin feeling rough and appearing uneven. While subtle, this can be a tremendous nuisance that is easily treated with either a light, medium, or deep peel—depending on the extent of your aesthetic goals. Glycolic, Jessner, and TCA peels are common medical grade peels that we carry that are beneficial for most, and patients with more availability for downtime can try modified phenol peels that provide much more dramatic results.
Ablative and Non Ablative Lasers
For more extensive uneven texture, some patients may opt for more aggressive procedures that may come with some extensive downtime to match—but with more dramatic results. Our recommended treatments—and the most renowned in our armamentarian—are Fraxel and CO2 Laser Resurfacing. While different lasers due to their unique resurfacing methods, both yield incredible results. Fraxel is non ablative and works by causing controlled microinjuries to fractions of the skin, while sparing some cells around the treated area. Your skin then works to rebuild the injured areas, sloughing off the cells and revealing fresh, new cells that are more plump and smooth. CO2 works similarly but is considered ablative, as it vaporizes the cells in the treated area. Your skin then rebuilds in a similar fashion to Fraxel, with a much smoother texture as a result. While both come with at least one week of downtime, CO2 is typically more aggressive, yields more noticeable results, and will require more time for recovery.
IPL
Are you concerned with more than uneven texture? An IPL® photofacial is a procedure that is performed with the use of an Intense Pulsed Light laser. A special wand is used to deliver light beams to precisely the right area of the face or body. While IPL is beneficial for reducing the appearance of pores, it makes a marked difference in pigmentation concerns and provides a subtle reduction in the appearance of uneven skin. IPL is ideal for anyone combating multiple concerns and only slightly uneven texture.
