How To Tell If Your Skincare Products Have Gone Bad

microneedling blog

Before we get into how amazing Microneedling is and what it can do to benefit your skin, we should point out that microneedling’s approval rating is consistently one of the highest among patients on RealSelf, as well as our own patients. It has remained one of our go-to procedures for the dramatic reduction of visible acne scars, with patients seeing noticeable improvement after just three or four sessions. And the same thing that makes microneedling so effective on acne scars also makes it effective at treating skin texture concerns and the signs of aging, too. Microneedling has been shown to reduce pore size, increase volume, soften fine lines, and treat other scars and stretch marks, while stimulating your skin to start producing new collagen and elastin.

IS MICRONEEDLING RIGHT FOR YOU?

Microneedling has long been the overlooked superhero of so many skincare issues. Dealing with wrinkles? Microneedling has the solution. Acne scars? Microneedling has got you. Noticing your skin is starting to get a little loose and saggy? Microneedling can help give you a lift. So why aren’t more of us using microneedling as a regular part of our skincare routine, both at home and with a professional?

WHAT DOES MICRONEEDLING TREAT?
Ready for an impressive list? Microneedling has been shown to effectively treat:

  • Wrinkles
  • Fine lines
  • Acne scars
  • Burns
  • Stretch marks
  • Loose skin
  • Surgical/injury scars
  • Enlarged pores

…and basically any other texture issues you could possibly experience. It can be performed on any part of the body. It’s possible that many of us either don’t know the benefits, or don’t understand how it works. And those of us who DO know the benefits and have experienced them firsthand can’t stop talking about it, so here are a few tidbits and FAQs that we commonly talk about with microneedling patients that can convince you of how amazing this treatment really is for your skin.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MICRONEEDLING AT HOME AND WITH A PROFESSIONAL?
It depends on the severity of the issues you’d like addressed, and how much patience you have. As a general rule, nothing beats a professional microneedling series (usually 3-4 treatments are needed to get results), and home kits are best reserved for maintaining smooth skin. Professional treatments will help you resolve texture issues like deep atrophic scarring or wrinkles over 4-6 weeks, and you’ll most likely get a recommendation to use a home kit once you’ve achieved your desired result from your series. The reasons for this are relatively simple: a professional can use needles that go deeper into the dermis, results are produced faster, and the procedure is required by law to be sterile. Home microneedling can’t penetrate further than 0.25mm into the skin, making it a very superficial treatment.

While needle depth is important when breaking up particularly stubborn scars or moderate to severe wrinkles, remember that a home kit will work well to maintain your results at home between treatments and enhance the professional services you receive.

CAN IT TREAT PIGMENT ISSUES OR ROSACEA?
Nope. As much as we love microneedling, if you’re dealing with pigment issues you’re better off trying a laser therapy that’s designed to treat skin discoloration such as VbeamFraxel, or BBL.

IS MICRONEEDLING AT HOME SAFE?
Yes, it is perfectly safe. Just make sure you keep your microneedling device clean by using rubbing alcohol before and after each use.

DOES MICRONEEDLING AT HOME HURT?
Microneedling in-office with a licensed professional means more needle depth, which means more potential for discomfort. That’s why we provide topical numbing so patients can relax during their treatment. However, home microneedling kits don’t typically come with much discomfort because the device won’t penetrate that far into your skin.

DOES IT MATTER WHAT MICRONEEDLING KIT I USE AT HOME?
Yes. While there are dermarollers and microneedling kits that come at different price points, this is the type of treatment where the quality of the products used is just as important as the needling device itself. Some brands will have you convinced that it’s the micro injuries caused by the needling that are the most important part of this treatment, but that’s not all there is to it. If you’re going to open up channels in your skin in order to stimulate new collagen and elastin, then you should be using medical grade product in order to make it as effective as possible. That’s why it’s still so important to have your first microneedling session be with a professional.
