The decade of your sixties is a unique time for your skin. Even those of us who are genetically blessed with youth genes will start to not only notice the signs of aging, but actually want to do something about it. And if you’ve been good about pre-juvenation procedures (more about that here), you might not need to do very much to be pleased with your skin’s health. But even the most diligent sunscreen loyalists will see some changes around this decade, and here’s what our own providers and other doctors recommend the most to help you continue to feel and look your best.
PRP for Hair Loss
Hair loss… it’s the bane of aging. You’ve taken great care of your skin and it shows, but then surprise! Your hair decides to start thinning. It’s annoying, but it’s much more treatable than some people realize. Thinning hair is a normal part of aging because of hormonal changes, but platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is one of the safest and most natural ways to get results you can honestly see. PRP simply uses your body’s own platelets to stimulate follicle growth by drawing from your arm and injecting it right back into your scalp, and side effects are non-existent with the exception of some soreness and mild bruising that fades quickly. And considering how much of a difference it can make, we think that’s well worth it. If you want to see the results of some of our patients after just one or two sessions, view our gallery here.
Genius RF
Genius RF does quite a bit to live up to its name—its smart technology can actually read your skin during a treatment and adjust how much energy is being delivered to make sure you get the most out of it. The name of the game with Genius RF is collagen regeneration, and it can even break apart hyperpigmentation and give you even skin tone on top of smoother, plumper skin. Patients in their 60s start to see a noticeable drop off in the plumpness of their skin, and one Genius RF treatment can go quite a long way for anyone in this age group.
Sculptra
Fillers are one of our favorite methods of anti-aging next to botox. While some filler types come with instant gratification, Sculptra isn’t exactly one of them. Sculptra behaves very differently from other fillers from the moment it’s injected, and it’s main purpose is to increase volume in entire areas. So if you’re noticing hollow cheeks or your face is looking more gaunt than usual, Sculptra will yield the most natural looking result. It’s not meant to plump lips or contour jawlines and cheekbones—it’s regarded as more of a pan facial treatment, boosting volume in large areas instead of treating specific lines. Since volume loss is a common problem for people in their 60’s, and Sculptra works to boost your body’s own collagen production (and it’s actually Dr. Tomar’s preferred filler for herself), you’ll see the results of fillers without looking unnaturally overfilled which can be a common concern for patients who haven’t tried it yet. It’s one of the most subtle, yet impactful filler options you can possibly get.
CO2 Laser
Throughout your earlier years, treatments like Fraxel and Clear + Brilliant were enough to get your skin absolutely glowing. However, in your 60s it may need a little extra boost. CO2 is by far the most aggressive of the lasers and it’s known for it’s big results after one session. Getting CO2 in your 60s is a real game changer for your skin because not only will it reduce your lines and wrinkles significantly, it stimulates collagen production deep within your skin, keeping them at bay for years. CO2 is particularly effective around the eyes in your 60s because your skin here has thinned out a lot. CO2 will help thicken it back up, reducing dark circles and lightening heavy lids.
CO2RE® Intima
Speaking of CO2 laser resurfacing, some women in their 60s may have a need for laser resurfacing in less obvious places and that’s where CO2RE® Intima can help. Vaginal rejuvenation with CO2RE® Intima improves not only sexual function and vaginal appearance, but also provides comfort for anyone who has had a difficult time with unwanted irritation, burning, dryness, or pain during intercourse following childbirth, menopause, or aging. Three sessions (with mild to no discomfort) can provide relief for years, and just one session a year for maintenance can help you maintain your results. Pairing it with something like VRS from Anteage means you don’t have to deal with the discomfort in silence, and you can go back to enjoying intimate relationships without worrying about uncomfortableness anymore.
Skin Cancer Screenings
This one may surprise some because it’s not cosmetic, but none of the cosmetic treatments you receive will mean anything if you aren’t healthy. If you weren’t great about applying sunscreen when you were supposed to, you really should start having your dermatologist regularly check your skin for any abnormalities. Decades of sun damage can sometimes start to add up and boil over as you reach certain ages, and it’s always best to stay on top of it. Get any new spots checked out, and make note if existing spots are starting to change. Skin cancer is highly treatable when it’s detected early, and you’ll have a good chance of having minimal cosmetic disruption as well if you catch possible cancers before they grow larger.
