What is Prejuvenation?

What is prejuvenation? | Supriya Tomar MD | West Palm Beach Dermatologist

It's not just for the younger crowd. How can you start pre-juvenating at any age?

Prejuvenation might sound like a trendy new buzz word, and most of the buzz around it seems to be aimed at millennials and Gen Z'er's. The truth is, prejuvenating (or pre-juving, as the kids call it) has been around for ages and it's pretty much what we do here at the offices of Supriya Aesthetic Dermatology every day.

All prejuvenation is is prevention. Preventing age spots, wrinkles, lines, sagging, and more for as long as possible. Cosmetic procedures that help prevent the signs of aging for decades longer than usual and undo damage that may not be obvious or visible yet, are usually preferred over more drastic corrective, surgical corrections later on. So what are some of our favorite ways to prejuvenate?

SKINCARE PRODUCTS

Maybe you have a few select products that you've used religiously throughout life or maybe you only loosely follow a home skincare routine. But as the seasons (and decades) pass, it's important to switch up your skincare and upgrade certain ingredients to keep up with your skin while it ages. We're big proponents of medical-grade products for obvious reasons, but the number one way to prejuvenate with skincare is and always will be vitamin C, retinol, and sunblock. Approximately 90% of aging comes from the sun, so we think that's a pretty compelling reason to use all three of these ingredients as a form of prevention from aging and skin cancer (vitamin c and sunblock in the morning, and retinol at night). So if you're planning to step outside of your house on any given day, these three products will prevent a flurry of issues like premature aging, sun damage, collagen loss, and skin cancer.

FACIALS & PEELS

We absolutely love our facials and chemical peels at Supriya Dermatology. Chemical peels have to be the single most effective way to see compelling results with as little downtime and discomfort as possible. In fact, there's a peel for anything now, including Eye & Lip Peels, Hand Peels, anti-aging peels, peels that can remove hyperpigmentation and age spots, peels that fight acne, and peels that correct scars and damage. And pairing regular chemical peels (we recommend at least 3 in a series) with HydraFacials or other facial treatments every month will boost your collagen production and keep years of aging at bay.

BOTOX & FILLERS

It's the most obvious way to prevent aging, but you'd be surprised how many people don't actually start these cosmetic procedures until after aging has begun. Younger patients don't typically need as much in order to keep skin looking fresh and wrinkle-free, and getting into a regular routine with treatments like this early on can help your skin stay relatively free of deep expression lines, volume loss, and wrinkles. Our rule of thumb? If you frown and "11" lines appear between your brows, it's time to start botox.

LASERS

After the age of 25, we start to lose 1% of our collagen each year. So even if your skin is currently in good shape,  routine Clear + Brilliant laser treatments (also known as Baby Fraxel) or Forever Young BBL really are beneficial for your skin. Both lasers are extremely affordable, there's practically no downtime, and they go a long way in preventing and erasing age spots and wrinkles by boosting the collagen you already have and more than making up for the 1% you lose. If started early enough, they really can stop the clock on aging. The trick to freezing time with lasers is regularity, so make sure you book them at least twice a year to stay ahead of collagen loss. And if you already have some moderate damage, take it a step up to Fraxel for a more dramatic result.
