Double Chin

The dreaded “double chin” is everyone’s worst nightmare when taking a picture, looking in the mirror, catching a glimpse of their profile, or finding themselves talking on Facetime. While it’s never as bad as when we accidentally flip our phone camera while leisurely looking down, it still can be the absolute bane of our existence. There are several factors that can cause a double chin. Genetics, weight gain or fluctuations, posture and aging are all factors that can cause a double chin. Furthermore, rapid weight gain or even loss can affect skin elasticity and fat distribution in the chin area.

When maintaining a healthy weight, and fixing your posture don’t do the trick in getting rid of your double chin, aesthetic treatments come to the rescue.

Treatments Offered

Kybella is an FDA-approved injectable treatment specifically to reduce the fat underneath the chin, known as submental fat. The active ingredient, deoxycholic acid, is naturally found in our body and helps break down and digest the fat that we eat. When injected, Kybella destroys fat cells, which are then naturally eliminated by the body over the following weeks of the injection site.

Kybella is injected into multiple points under the chin, and the number of injections varies depending on the amount of fat and desired results. Once injected, the active ingredient deoxycholic acid destroys fat cells in the targeted area, preventing further fat storage in the future. This process works gradually, as your body naturally metabolizes the fat cells over several weeks, leading to a slimmer chin and sculpted jawline. Once the fat cells are destroyed, they are permanently gone with lasting results as long as you maintain your weight.

CoolSculpting is another FDA- approved option that can treat a double chin through what is called cryolipoysis, a non-invasive fat freezing technology. During a CoolSculpting treatment, a special applicator is places underneath the chin to target and freeze fat cells without damaging the skin and surrounding areas.  Over the following weeks, the frozen fat cells are naturally processed and eliminated by the body, resulting in a more sculpted, contoured jawline. This procedure is minimally invasive and requires zero-down time.

How many Kybella treatments are typically needed to see a noticeable reduction in a double chin?

Most patients need 2 or more sessions, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart depending on the size of the area being treated. Results become noticeable within about 6 weeks after each treatment.

What are the possible side effects of Kybella, and how long do they last?

Kybella has some side effects including swelling, redness, bruising, numbness, or temporary hardness in the treated area. Swelling and redness typically peaks at 2-3 days and gradually improves within 1–2 weeks. Bruising can last 1–2 weeks and numbing or firmness can persist for several weeks and usually resolves on its own as your body breaks down the fat cells in the chin.

Can CoolSculpting be used in conjunction with Kybella for enhanced double chin reduction?

Yes, for layering the site, you can first treat chin with CoolSculpting and reassess after 6 weeks and then decide if it can benefit from additional sessions (typically a minimum of two treatments). After the fat is significantly reduced, Kybella is injected to create a sculpted, contoured look on the chin.

Typically, at least two CoolSculpting sessions are recommended if a patient is considering combining Kybella and CoolSculpting. After a minimum of two sessions, a patient can then treat more specific, precise areas with Kybella.
