What causes age spots?
Sun exposure contributes a great deal to the development of age spots. The use of tanning beds is also thought to play a role in their appearance. Exposure to light increases the production of melanin, a pigment that gives skin its natural color.
How are age spots removed?
They may be removed with the use of prescription-strength creams that contain a bleaching agent. Spots that do not respond to this type of treatment may be removed using one of many different types of lasers. It is important to have a thorough evaluation of the treatment site by a board-certified dermatologist prior to doing any laser treatments. All cancerous and abnormal growths should be properly treated prior to such treatments. Chemical peels or microdermabrasion can sometimes be effective at removing these spots as well.
Are there any risks associated with removing age spots?
The proper precautions need to be taken when removing age spots with a laser, which can include wearing protective eyewear. Burning can sometimes occur if lasers are used improperly. Some patients may develop a sensitivity to prescription creams, which is characterized by rashes or swollen skin. Some itching and burning can result from chemical peels, while microdermabrasion can cause skin to be especially sensitive to sunlight for a few days.
What are the benefits to having age spots removed?
The primary benefit is an enhanced appearance, which can also boost one’s confidence levels.
How many treatments will be needed?
Most age spots can be successfully treated with only one laser treatment, chemical peel, or a series of microdermabrasions.
Will these spots return at a later time?
The return of age spots is always possible, especially if individuals continue to be exposed to sunlight. In addition, new age spots can develop on other areas of the body at a later time.
LIVER SPOTS:
What are Liver spots?
Liver spots, also called lentigines are sharply defined, brown or black patches on the skin. Many people have a hereditary predisposition for them. While liver spots may develop at an early age, even in childhood, they are more common in older people, especially those who have spent too much time in the sun.
How are liver spots treated?
- Topical Creams – Bleaching creams, Tretinoin and alpha-hydroxy acids applications can fade small spots. Results can be seen in two months or longer.
- Chemical Peels – A chemical solution is applied to peel away the blemished skin. The depth of the chemical peel is varied based on the individual patients need.
- Laser Surgery – In the last few years I have seen significant technological advancements in laser surgery. Lasers, IPL and Broad Band Light – BBL can be used to treat these blemishes of time. The treatments are usually done in a series of three to four treatments and post treatment the spots get darker and peel off slowly over the course of 5-7 days. The results are long lasting if sun precautions are maintained after the treatments.
RUDDY COMPLEXION:
What causes the complexion to be ruddy or red?
Ruddy complexion is caused by broken capillaries. This can be secondary to underlying Rosacea and secondary to cumulative sun-exposure.
How is the ruddy complexion treated?
If the redness is secondary to Rosacea then I typically start patients on a topical regimen and if needed on oral antibiotics. I can then address the residual redness with laser and IPL treatments.
Laser Surgery for Red spots and broken capillaries:
The residual redness can be treated with a series of laser treatments. I use VBeam laser and IPL to treat broken capillaries. It is a series of four treatments which are spaced every 4 weeks. Patients can have some temporary bruising after the treatment.
How much will Age Spot Treatment cost?
Cost depends on the type of treatment that’s recommended. Prescription creams are the least expensive method followed by chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and laser treatment.
Many people are amazed at the improvement in their complexion after having age spots removed. Doing so can make patients look younger, which in turn can improve their self-esteem.
