Platelet Rich Fibrin for Hair Loss in Jupiter and West Palm Beach, FL

PRP for Hair Loss in West Palm Beach

You may have heard about Platelet-rich Plasma (PRP) as an effective treatment to stimulate hair growth. PRP has been around for quite some time, used as both a hair loss and skincare treatment. However, advancements have been made and many providers and patients are turning to an enhanced and improved form of PRP known as  Platelet-rich Fibrin (PRF) for androgenetic alopecia and general hair loss.

What is Platelet Rich Fibrin Therapy (PRF)?

PRF is typically used to treat the effects of aging, however, PRF has been able to help patients suffering from hair loss due to androgenetic alopecia or aging. It works because it harnesses your body's own healing mechanisms to stimulate collagen product and hair follicle stimulation. When you’re cut, the elements in your blood help to stop the bleeding and activate repairing measures to the damaged area with growth factors. These same growth factors are what PRF utilizes by stimulating your body's molecular signaling pathways. These signals tell your hair follicles to start producing hair.

Androgenic alopecia is hair loss that occurs when hair follicles undergo miniaturization: the shrinking from strong thick terminal hairs to thin wispy vellus-like hairs. It is the most common cause of hair loss and will affect up to 70% of men and 40% of women at some point in their lifetime. Men typically present with hairline recession at the temples and balding at the crown of the head, while women notice thinning over the top of their scalps. Both genetic and environmental factors play a role, and in some cases the cause is unknown.

How is PRF different from PRP?

PRF works similarly to PRP, however, the process of preparing the blood samples used is different. PRF starts by taking a small blood sample from the patient and spinning it in a centrifuge at a lower speed than PRP. The resulting solution has more stem cells and blood cells than PRP that are injected directly into the scalp. Circulation increases to the hair follicles and it can even result in not just more hair, but a thicker hair shaft. By reversing hair miniaturization and preventing hair loss, you're able to hold on to the hair you have for longer periods of time, as well as generate new hair growth.

The treatment comes with no downtime, and you're able to wash your hair like normal after PRF. If you want to see the full benefits of PRF, it's recommended that you get a series (usually 3), and you can follow it up with maintenance treatments once or twice a year as needed. There are also shampoos, conditioners, and serums that will help you improve scalp and hair health and maintain your results longer.

How long does it take before results are noticed?

Results may begin to appear several weeks after treatment, however, full results shouldn't be expected until about 3 months after your final treatment in the series.

How long do results last?

Since aging, environmental factors, and genetics will continue to be a contributing factor for hair loss, the amount of time you enjoy your results may vary from other patients. That's why it's so important to get maintenance treatments about twice a year if you want to hold on to your results.

Who is a candidate for PRF?

Patients with androgenetic alopecia, medication-induced alopecia, or age-related hair loss are ideal candidates for PRF.
