Is Chin Augmentation the New Nose Job?

Not too crazy about your profile, but also not interested in extensive downtime and surgical procedures? Here are five ways you can get a sculpted and well-defined jawline and chin without undergoing surgery.

WHY IS CHIN AUGMENTATION BECOMING SO POPULAR?
With many plastic surgery procedures, patients are shifting away from permanent alterations to their face that sometimes come with costly consequences such as dissatisfaction with their new, drastically altered appearance. Instead, patients are favoring more subtle alterations that simply enhance natural features instead of artificially creating them. And while chin augmentation can be surgically performed with implants, it is one of the areas where surgery is by no means required to get the shape and contour you prefer. And with most chin implant surgeries costing anywhere from $6,000 to $14,000 depending on where you live, it can become an expensive alteration that can't be adjusted or removed without more costly surgery if you aren't pleased with the result.

DERMAL FILLERS6-Feb-15-2021-07-55-41-99-PM-1
We've used fillers for fuller lips, to reduce the appearance of prominent wrinkles, and to repair volume loss due to aging. However, fillers will also work to re-sculpt facial features beyond your cheekbones regardless of your age, including your chin. Some patients with a rounded jawline who wish to have that area more clearly defined can have filler added to the area to create perfectly sculpted contours such as the patient pictured. A chin augmentation using dermal fillers will typically last between 6-8 months.

KYBELLAAboutKybella
Sometimes the only thing standing in your way of a perfectly defined jawline and chin is that pesky submental fat otherwise known as a double chin. Fat that collects beneath the chin can dramatically change your profile as well as make you look heavier than you actually are. This fat can be the result of anything from poor diet with a sedentary lifestyle to simple aging or genetics. Double chins are sometimes associated with weight gain, but you can develop submental fat even if you stay in good shape and are relatively thin. Kybella is the first and only FDA approved injectable created to target submental fat and dissolve it. Kybella is injected into submental fat through a series of injections of deoxycholic acid. Kybella targets fat cells and dissolves them permanently, and your body then flushes out the fat cells over the course of 6-8 weeks. Treatments can be repeated every 6-8 weeks as needed, but most patients are satisfied after 1-2 treatments. The best part? The results from Kybella are permanent as it causes permanent fat cell destruction in the targeted area.

ULTHERAPY OR PROFOUND

We know that Kybella can help reduce any fat that collects beneath the chin, however, sometimes skin can still hang as it loses elasticity. This is where procedures such as Ultherapy and Profound are beneficial for their ability to lift skin by stimulating collagen and elastin production. While each procedure works slightly differently, they both result in a tightened and lifted appearance. When performed along the jawline, they can lift any sagging skin and results can last for 1-2 years.

If you have sagging skin and double chin but you are unsure of whether or not Kybella, Ultherapy, and Profound are for you, there is another alternative for fat removal. CoolSculpting has a procedure for smaller pockets of fat called the CoolMini, which works perfectly for double chin with most patients reaching full results after just one treatment. It works by freezing the skin using a device that gently attaches to your skin. The procedure takes about 35 minutes and comes with little to no downtime.

PDO THREADSImage result for pdo threads chin
Out of all the options presented so far, this procedure is the only one regarded as semi-invasive as opposed to non-invasive due to the cannulas that have to be inserted just beneath the skin. PDO Threads are barbed threads that can be placed beneath the skin among various parts of the body, however, one of the most common areas is along the jawline. They can lift and tighten skin along the jawline, giving you a much more defined shape and contour. After the threads are inserted, they are adjusted by Dr. Tomar to the patient's desired look and the results can last for several months until the threads dissolve on their own.
